Thank you to all of the MOAS members who attended our Member Appreciation Week events during the first week of April 2017! The entire Museum staff had a great time at our Member Mixer event getting to enjoy great food from local vendors while getting to know our members.

We kicked off the Member Appreciation Week with Chief Curator and Gary R. Libby Curator of Art, Ruth Grim’s wonderful talk on the exhibition on loan from Syracuse University Art Museum, Pulled, Pressed and Screened: Important American Prints. The following day brought us back in time during Senior Curator of Educator and History, Zach Zacharias’s talk on the Prehistory of Florida. It was fascinating to hear about the history that can be found right here in our own community.

We did not stop there! Dr. Terry Oswalt, Chair of the Physical Science Department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, took us to galaxies far away with an eye opening and intriguing talk about searching for life in the universe. Who else do you think could be out there?

MOAS Member Mixer, April 6, 2017

Our biggest event of the week was our MOAS Member Mixer where our members were able to enjoy food and beverage samples from local restaurants and vendors. There were door prizes and an opportunity to enjoy the new planetarium show, Phantom of the Universe, along with group tours through the Root Family Museum, the Dow Gallery of American Art, and the NASA Innovations exhibit, on loan from NASA and the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. It was so wonderful to meet new and longtime members throughout the evening. Thank you to all of the vendors that came out that night to help the Museum appreciate MOAS members, including Greentown Taverna, Blau Grill, Gold Leaf Coffee, Steal Oak Coffee, Cakery Creation, Creations Catering, the Shores Resort & Spa, Victory Popcorn, Tomoka Brewery, Ormond Brewery, and Good Humor Ice Cream.

Dr. Stefan Michael Krause and his lecture on Traditional Navigation
and Canoe Building in Yap, Federated States of Micronesia

At the end of the week, Dr. Stefan Michael Krause, Assistant Professor at Beacon College, gave a lecture on Yapese navigation and hand-carving practices that have been passed down generation to generation through memory. We ended Member Appreciation week with a Family Energy Stage Show where children enjoyed participating in the show and learned all about the different forms of energy all around us such as sound, light, heat, and electricity.

Thank you again to all of our MOAS members for their continuous support of the Museum. Without you, the Museum would not be able to continue to offer its amazing programs and exhibitions. We hope to see you all at our next member-only event on Tuesday, May 2nd with lunch at Café 101 followed by a tour of the Southeast Museum of Photography.
