School Groups

The Museum of Arts and Sciences is located on a 90-acre natural setting in Daytona Beach, Florida. The museum holds over 20,500 art, science, and history objects in its permanent collection. Our renowned collections, planetarium, outdoor sculpture garden, boardwalk nature trails and environmental education complex make for a wonderful cultural fieldtrip. We invite your school group to visit the museum for a distinctive and cherished experience.

How To Schedule a Group

There will be no charge for the stage show and planetarium show for Volusia County Schools. All Volusia County School bookings must be done through teacher on assignment Roger Hoefer at rrhoefer@volusia.k12.fl.us.

Tours for school groups last two hours. The menu of activities consists of gallery tours, planetarium shows, hands-on classes, and stage shows.

Gallery Tours and Planetarium Shows

Gallery tours & general museum gallery tours last one hour and consist of three twenty-minute gallery tours. The cost is $7.00 for students or chaperones. There is no charge for teachers. An age appropriate one-hour planetarium show may be added to this experience for no additional charge, upon availability.

You may choose three of the following galleries to tour:

  • Dow Gallery of American Art - Includes portraits, landscapes, and furniture that date from 1620 to 1913.
  • Cuban Foundation Museum - The largest collection of Cuban Art in the free world.
  • Charles and Linda Williams Children's Wing - This tour consists of free time in the science corner and classroom areas.
  • Prehistory of Florida - Includes the Giant Ground Sloth and many of Florida's prehistoric animals.
  • Root Family Museum - Includes two historic railroad cars, 800 teddy bears, the Coca Cola collection and much more.
  • Shulte Chinese Gallery - Selected ancient Chinese artifacts including porcelain, sculpture, and tomb pieces.
  • Pre-Columbian Art - Includes objects that date from over a two thousand year period and originate from Peru, Mexico, and Central America.
  • Planetarium shows - View a program about the night sky.
Stage Shows

Museum stage shows are designed to enhance student understanding in the arts, sciences, and history. Each show lasts approximately one hour. The shows are usually conducted every Friday during the standard Volusia County School calendar. Minimum seating of 30 students is required. The cost is $7.00 for students or chaperones. There is no charge for teachers. An age appropriate one hour planetarium show may be added to this experience for no additional charge, upon availability.

Hands-On Classes

Hands - on classes last one hour* and can be combined with an age appropriate planetarum show for no additional charge, upon availability. The cost is $7.00 per student with no additional charge for teachers or chaperones (one chaperone admitted at no charge for every 10 students). There is a 15 student minimum.

Hands-On Tuscawilla Nature Walk

Students will explore the Tuscawilla Preserve and learn about the ecosystem of the hydric hammock. As they walk on the Klancke Nature walk, they are guided to observe the animals crawling on the forest floor, climbing the sub-canopy, and soaring above the canopy. They will engage in activites in the Windows in the Forest classroom identifying fossils and making observations through microscopes.

Hands-On Electricity

Students will get their “hands-on” and build circuits to perform various things. As the basics of electricity are explained, the students are challenged to complete a series circuit using an inquiry approach. Real satisfaction “lights-up” their faces as they achieve success in constructing their circuits.  

 


 Hands-On Prehistoric Florida

Students will tour our prehistoric Florida gallery and discover the ancient animals of our state including the Giant Ground Sloth. Then they participate in a science lab consisting of sorting and identifying Florida Fossils.

 

Hands-On Egypt

Students will watch a 45 minute stage show based on the wonders of ancient Egypt. They will then create Egyptian Art on papyrus in a 45 minute class using the museum's 200 pound printing press. *This class can does not include a planetarium visit and is 2 hours long.

Hands-On Ancient China

Students will tour the Chinese gallery, discover our Silk Road trader's box and design their own porcelain plate. Students will then create their own Chinese landscape on rice paper.

Hands-On Colonial America

Students will learn about the early portraits in our Dow Gallery of American Art while participating in a historical reenactment. Students will then create their own Early American portrait and develop creative writing skills while describing it.
