	DESCRIPTION: Bring the whole family for a full day of activities as we celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This large event will have a full array of expert female scientific speakers and presenters from various disciplines such as astronomy, biology, environmental science, chemistry, and engineering. There will be guest speakers in the Lohman Planetarium, as well as speakers and demonstrations throughout the Museum.  \n Seating for our guest lectures is limited and is first-come, first-served.  \n Admission: Free for members or with paid museum admission. \n   \n Just some of the accomplished women that will be presenting...  \n   \n   Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell  University of Oxford   Enjoy a talk by groundbreaking British astronomer, Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell who, along with Antony Hewish, first discovered pulsars in 1967 with the aid of a radio telescope specifically designed to record very rapid fluctuations in radio sources.  \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   Dr. Allison Kirkpatrick  University of Kansas  https://physics.ku.edu/kirkpatrick-allison    Hearts of Darkness: The Monster Black Holes Hidden in Galaxies  All galaxies host a supermassive black hole at their centers, more than a million times the mass of our Sun! These monsters are often lurking unseen behind thick blankets of dust and gas. Using space telescopes we will uncover the secrets at the centers of galaxies in the distant universe 7-10 billion years in the past. This is an epoch in which galaxies are actively feeding their black holes, wreaking havoc on the galaxy ecosystem. I'm using Uhura and the letter Nichelle Nichols received from MLK as an example of the influence that women in science fiction can have on an entire civil rights movement. I'll then be covering a variety of women from popular science fiction and their influences in real world science and the lives of women.
