Special Lohman Planetarium Talk: Why Isn't Pluto a Planet Anymore?

Date:
1/23/2026 at 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Event Description

What makes a planet... a planet? And how does a world lose its planetary status?

Once hailed as the “ninth planet” following its discovery in 1930, Pluto was officially reclassified as a "dwarf planet" in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union. But what led to this decision? Join Planetarium Educator Christian Traverson for a journey to the icy edge of our solar system where he’ll explore the history of Pluto’s discovery, its dramatic reclassification, and the scientific developments that reshaped our understanding of what it means to be a planet.
