Family STEAM Day

Date:
2/8/2020 at 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Event Description

Join educators, Kelsey Hansen and Nicole Messervy, for a fun and creative Family STEAM Day at MOAS. While inspiring curiosity, families can channel their creative sides to engage with several hands-on activities that connect art and science.

Admission: Free for members or with paid museum admission.

Fun Activities for Family STEAM Day

Chemistry is Colorful: Use the chemical process called paper chromatography to separate color pigments, learn about color molecules, and make beautiful chromatograms to hang as decorations.

Filtered Light: NASA scientists use telescopes and other instruments to capture and filter different energies of light. By using red and blue colored filters on different images, you’ll become familar with how space scientists observe distant planets, galaxies, nebulas, and other objects in space.

Asteroid Mining: Asteriods are small, rocky objects - some contain precious metals or water ice. Design your own mining machine to mine for minerals and other resources on your asteroid.

Alien Worlds: If life exists elsewhere in the universe, it could look very different from life on Earth. Design your own alien world with inspiration from creatures living in extreme environments on Earth.

Nebula Spin Art: A nebula is a large cloud of gas and dust in space that can be created by a dying star. NASA scientists can assign colors in nebula images to represent different elements and other characteristics. Make your own colorful nebula in this activity.

Design, Build, and Test!: Scientists use spacecrafts to explore Earth and space. Designing, testing, and preparing to launch a spacecraft takes a lot of time, and scientists need to make sure their crafts are structurally sturdy during launch and while traveling through space. Design, build, and test your own spacecraft in this creative hands-on activity.
